WORD TO RUSSIA

VLADIMIR MYSIN • Oct 06, 2020

In the early nineties, I had the pleasure of starting work in the US in “Word To Russia” radio-mission under the leadership of Mikhail Lokteff and a wonderful team of the mission’s board of directors, which mainly consisted of Americans. All of them were deeply concerned about the spiritual problems of the people in Russia and other republics of the former USSR.

It was a great team of sacrificial and God-loving people, united by a big and sincere desire to work for His glory in the field of evangelization of people living in Eastern Europe.

The main spiritual work of “Word To Russia” was and has always been and to this day is radio preaching to Slavic people on shortwave radio, from different sides covering all of the former Soviet Union, bringing them the good news of Christ. Apart from radio programs, the mission was widely engaged in the correspondence with its listeners. We sent them copies of programs they liked, spiritual literature, packages with clothes, we answered their questions, etc.

The mission’s main weekly radio program was called “Pages of Life”. My major responsibility was to prepare the content for this program. In addition, our mission aired a weekly program for children “An endless fountain”. Other programs included “Pages of Life” in Ukrainian and a few programs in Uzbek.

We carried out serious and interesting work with American churches, telling our American brothers and sisters about Slavic people’s spiritual problems. Specifically for this purpose we organized a choir of brothers, immigrated to the US. We called this choir “Living letters”. All the members of the choir, with great enthusiasm and free of charge, devoted long hours to working for the glory of God. Living up to our name, we visited various churches, spiritual meetings and conferences, participated in evangelism, organized several missions around North America with Viktor Hamm.

It was a fascinating time. With a great deal of hope and sympathy, we all looked at the Eastern European countries that were already going through dramatic changes, creating tremendous opportunities for evangelism. Naturally, such changes provoked enormous interest in these countries for American Christians.

At that time, the “Word to Russia” mission started to cooperate with a very famous and influential American Christian organization “Focus on the Family”. It was created many years ago through the initiative of one of the most respected specialists in the field of family and parenting in North America, Dr. James Dobson.

We received texts, music, records and all the necessary content for radio programs in Russian, from Los Angeles (back then “Focus on the Family” was still headquartered in Los Angeles. A little later they moved to Colorado).

Dr. Dobson’s works were truly amazing and unique. We translated them into Russian, edited them, recorded a voice over in our studio, added music and announcements and sent the resulting master tapes to the international department of this organization.

Some time later, “Focus on the Family” moved their work of making Russian programs to Moscow, opening a Russian branch that is operating there to this day.

It didn’t happen because Dr. Dobson was dissatisfied with the quality of our work. The reason was a particular development policy of this organization, according to which every effort was made to move the production of international programs to the territory of the country, where the language is spoken, where it was continued by local employees.  Due to this far-sighted policy, the organization “Focus on the Family” has branches in many countries around the world.

Using materials from several of Dr. Dobson’s radio programs and some other sources, I prepared a special radio program, dedicated to fathers. We called it “Fathers and Sons”. This program was my last work in the “Word To Russia” mission, which was, unfortunately, never aired for certain reasons. But I still keep the text of this program in my manuscripts. Today you have the opportunity to read it.

I am publishing this material, hoping that many of our readers will thus be able to find substantial assistance and inspiration for solving problems in their families.

         God bless you!
